Eagle River: Clear To The Bottom
by joey on Jul.31, 2008, under Fly Fishing
Newellsy and I plopped the boat in the Eagle this afternoon trying to get at least one last float in before it is too low. The river was unbelievably clear, you could see fish move as the shadow from the boat eased over them. I was on the sticks first rowing Jason thru a few mile of private water. A nice Brown put us on the board only a few strokes from the put in.

It felt good to get one in the boat and know that what we had on the end of the line was working. Jason hooked a few more fish around the same size and then all hell broke loose when the he hooked a big Bow in a rock garden. The fish ran right into the current and under the boat. The water we were in was not exactly easy to slow down in, in fact I am suprised we got out of there without getting stuck on a rock. We shouted with laughter when we got this guy in the net.

We got through the rest of the bone yard and on the next cast a big brown took off jumping 5 times before getting into the net.

“Alright Newellsy your on the sticks I am on the Bow.” We fished down through more private water hooking and losing big Rainbows and Browns. I fianally got one to the net in some faster water down river.

We did get a couple of blooper shots.

It was an awesome afternoon on the Eagle it might have been the last float of the season but we’ll keep our eyes on the gauge. Maybe one more……
Trout Beads: Almost As Good As The Real Thing
by joey on Jul.29, 2008, under Fly Fishing
This September My Father and I are heading to Alaska for some Rainbow Trout Fishing and posibly a Silver Salmon. Once I found out of this trip I started checking out what kind of flies I would need. Turns out that the egg will be the go to pattern. Having very goood luck with them in the spring for steelhead, I found a company that specializes in trout beads. After having 90% of our fish on these in the spring I have no doubt they will work for Rainbows in AK. Check it out.

Eagle River: Caddis Love
by joey on Jul.19, 2008, under Fly Fishing
Woke up bright and early this morning, grabbed some caffine, and plopped the boat in the water. Jason met me at the ramp and we shoved off just before the Caddis Hatch. 100 yards from the ramp Jason had one take his day and missed it. Then again….then again. “Dammit Newellsy I am sticking you on the oars if you keep missing em” I shouted. We rolled down the Eagle casting to risers all morning. Things started to slow down as we neared the take out but we had plenty of chances.

Jason getting ready to fire.

Please Mend….

Nice Rainbow we got to the Boat.

Another look.
