Baja Mexico: Rooster Fishing

by joey on May.11, 2009, under Fly Fishing

Jeremy Cameron and I just got back from a trip to the East Cape of Baja Mexico in search of Rooster Fish with Jeff deBrown. Things were almost canceled with the Swine Hype but we pushed on and found no swine in Baja. Only Rooster Fish. The fishing was like nothing else I have ever done. Hard is not even the correct word for what the beach fishing is like. The sand is like pea gravel and about 115 degrees, the sun is intense at every level and the fish are tough as hell to catch. The first day we walked nearly ten miles on the baking sheet only to see a few Roosters and a ton of Jacks. Justin was able to get one on the beach but the rest of us went home empty handed.

The second day Jeremy, Jeff and I went out on a Panga and tried out luck just a bit further off shore. Really just outside of casting distance from the beach. this was a great way to learn how Rooster Fish like to see how the fly is presented. too fast they couldn’t catch it, too slow and they wouldn’t eat it. The fly had to be moving slow and fast at the same time. It got frusturating but it was all visual and very exciting. The boat game doesn’t get the press that the beach fishing does but it is also a tough game. You might get more shots on the boat but it still is tough.

The rest of the trip we were on the beach. Driving up and down sand roads from spot to spot and walking miles upon miles along the beach searching for “El Grande.” We would sight cast to some bigger fish crusing the shore line but they would decline our offerning and head out into the deep blue. frusturating but still amazing to see.

The roads to the beaches are lines with barbedwire.
