Colorado Fly Fishing: San Juan Worm Hatch
by joey on May.30, 2009, under Fly Fishing
Okay now I am not too proud to nymph with a San Juan Worm. In fact my friends are not either, and even though the Worm was not the hot fly we did find a couple fish that LOVED the worm. Jeff Lyon and I made tracks to a now floatable section of XY river yesterday morning with high expectations. We brough streamers, big nymphs and lots of 2x & 3x.

Now I leave the name of this river undisclosed for the protection of my own hide and others. I am sure there are a couple of my 20 viewers (if I am lucky) that know this strech of water but lets keep those who do not guessing. The put in is alway a bit nerve racking but we learned a better way to lower the boat down the 90-100 foot bank.

The first half of the float was streamer action, well no action but a lot of casting. We saw a nice pool that looked fishy so we broke out the Nymph Stick and stuck a few to boost our confidence.

The shute was a little loud and fast….I wasn’t nervous…….Really I wasn’t.

OMG it ate the Worm!!!
We pushed on continuing with the streamers. Had a few looks but it just wasn’t happening. Not For us anyway. Back to the nymph stick we went. Lyon found a nicely colored Brown in a hidden bucket under at Pine Tree.

Out of the Canyon and into some Very Very Nymph friendly water we began to do some damage. Serious damge. We had a 20 incher as the trailing fly behind our bright red worm. The 20 incher was hot.

Lyon is a novice rower so I was on the sticks most of the day sweating out the beer that was forced into my system the night before. Was it forced? Jeff had a field day with these fish. I think he felt kinda dirty after the float.

I couldn’t take it any longer I had to get on the rod and out of the Rowers Seat. Lyon was glad to switch with me and I was able to get a few to the Net.

RAD day on the river looking forward to another today. Headed North to the Upper Colorado for the Salmon Fly Hatch….. suckers.

I’m not sure where that water is but it certainly gives up some great fish. Can you get there from Utah?

Of course you can get there from Utah. It is probably about a 7 hour drive. About the same as driving from Portland to Pulaski. Where are you fishing in UT?

The old Scarlet Harlot rarely fails to produce. I need to come out and fish with you. We should also meet up on some of my home waters in UT and WY.
