Colorado Trout Trip: Phase Two
by joey on Aug.11, 2008, under Fly Fishing
The old man and I took off about Five days ago and headed South towards Gunnison to throw some line on the Taylor and the Gunni. We showed up to the Taylor River around noon right before the Drakes started coming off. We rigged up with some big ole’ dries and fished behind every rock up and down the river. We had some good luck landed and losing decent fish all afternoon.

We headed down the canyon around 5 to get our lodging situated and see some “old friends” by 6 we were at the local bar doing shots of tequilla with some random fella telling lies about fish we had lost. the shot idea seemed like a good idea until about 4 in the morning when my tounge was stuck to the roof of my mouth and a bear outside in the garbage was adding noise to an already swollen head. The next morning found us back on the Taylor in one of our favorite runs nymphing for old mossy back with Mysis Shrimp. We each caught a number of Browns and Bows in the run uncluding a cool little Cutthroat.

I meandered up stream and back again to fins my Dad hooked up to a giant and I mean giant Brown Trout. I waded out deep and chased it down river trying to net it but we lost the beast on the final netting attempt. He blamed me for losing the fish and I blamed the size of the net so…we agreed that we needed a bigger net. That night found us in the same situation as the night before but instead of the bear waking us up I came eye to eye with him when I took the dog out. Needless to say Cam’s walk was pretty short that night. Friday morning we dumped the boat in the Gunnison River and floated 10 miles through private water stripping streamers the whole way. We turned a lot of fish, landed a few smalls Browns and one big Cut Bow.

We finished up the float pretty quick so we could try and catch the Green Drake Hatch that night over on the Roaring Fork. We raced over Kebler Pass and into Basalt to meet a rain storm head on and not really any good fishing. It rained all night so we got blown out on the fork and tried the Frying Pan for a few hours and got our fix for the day. All packed up with the boat in tow we took the back way home from Basalt on Road 400 (all dirt) over a pretty killer pass.

Cameron was a trooper for the trip he rode in the back of the truck and the boat everyday.
We were finally back to where we started and the old man had one more day to fish before he had to get back to the ringing phone and screaming employees. After making some serious decisions and a lot of phone calls we decided to float a River that was close by and had Green Drakes poping in the Caynon.

100 feet of rope was necessary for the put in. But once we were on the water the fishing was off the hook. It was definately one of the best days on the River I have had in a long time.

First fish of the float…lovin the drake.

Nice take on another Drake near this weird chair on an island in the middle of the river.

Nice Bow on the dry.
The sun came out and the dry fly action slowed so we decided to get down and dirty. It Worked

Bulldog with his fish of the trip. Not too bad.

An overall great trip…The last day was by far the best but it is alway nice to get out there with your pops and spend some time on the water. See you in a few Dad…..a little closer to the North Pole.
