Derek Rust former Mountain trout bum out in Tahoe has hung up his trout gear for a poling skiff and heavier fly rods down in the Florida Keys. He has started a blog about chasing fish on foot and from the looks of it he has been doing quite well. Looks like Derek has found a way to crush bonefish, tarpon and snook on the florida beaches as well as sneaky roadside ditches. Take a peak and add him to your blogroll. Keep on crushing Derek. See you on the beach in June. Give Chowda a high five for me.

It is with bloodshot eyes that I inform my followers that we lost a remarkable dog today. Max, our family dog moved on to tastier rawhides, cooler water and bigger flocks of ducks this morning. He was a best friend to all who knew him. Sure there were those times when we had to chase him across rt 202 and dig him out of the dumpster or when he would chase a young bitch in heat (who could blame him) all the way around the lake. He will be sorely missed and he will forever hold a special place in all of us.

On a personal note ” I miss you bud, I hope you and Duke are a back to chasing half eaten tennis balls around the lake and diving deep to pick rocks off the lake bottom. I will miss having you chase me around the house and greeting me at the door with a deep loud bark whenever I’d return home. I wish I could have been there to say my final farewell, thank you for your companionship, your understanding and your love. Cheers Mr. Brown.”

Based out of King Salmon Alaska is a Guiding Operation, run by Christian Elwell, called Borealis Outdoor Adventures. They specialize in remote wilderness fly fishing floats deep in the Alaskan Bush. Now I didnt know what to expect when Christian contacted me early this past spring but I was not dissapointed. After missings 2 different planes re-arragning flight times and spending the night in the 115 degree weather of Pheonix, I finally made it to King Salmon.

WOW…. Now King Salmon thats a serious fishing town that might only be trumped by Naknek. Anyway I met up with the boys and went straight to the bar which is right next to the airport, another bar and the grocery store. After a few beers I found my balance and was able to start conversing about the trip agenda. The Plan was simple; catch a plane at Branch River Air and fly out to camp to meet the boats. Good enough. The next morning found us all anxiously waiting our departure. before we knew it we were on a beaver and into the air looking out over the vast Alaskan Tundra. After a quick 75 minute flight we landed on the mouth of Nonvianuk Lake.

We camped the first night at the mouth of the lake and had spectacular fishing. We busted out the spey rods and waded out into the lake where there was enough current to get a good swing. A big purple and black intruder was a hot fly and we hammered Lake Trout, Sockeye and Rainbows on the swing. Jeff Brazda was on fire and landed a 15 lb Lake Trout early in the afternoon.

This was the start to our 6 day float down the river. It was my dads birthday and he mentioned that “there was no better way to spend it” after his 3rd Jack. I couldn’t have agree more with him.

Let me tell you a bit about Christian Elwell and Borealis Outdoor Adventures. When one hears of camping for 6 days one might think wow thats a little rough and another might think that it is no problem. But, with BOA they bring the Lodge to the river! So all of you who might think that it is a little rough follow me here. The food, which is prepared by Christian, is off the charts. No hot dogs, hamburgers and smores every night. NO NO NO we went with style. Fresh Alsakan Seafood Pad Thai, Spice Rubbed Pork chops, Fresh Blacken Sockeye Salmon were just a few on our dinner table each night. 2 people slept in 6 person tents with cots and sleeping pads so there was no cramping in a tent and sleeping on the wet ground. And since we were living on the river we could fish for almost 24 hours a day. More like 18 hours..which was aided by the perpetual sun shine.

Night 5 Camp Site Near The King Hole, Alagnak River.

FISHING

The fly fishing was great.. well it is Alaksa and when there are that many fish in the system it is difficult to complain. We were dead nuts in the middle of a solid Sockeye Salmon run and we railed the hell out of them . Once you found a pod of them it was realatively easy to get them to bite. Now I know that “they” (whoever they are) say that salmon do not bite but after taking multiple $4.oo flies out of thier mouths I can assure you that they do. Probably not out of hunger but out of aggression. These little rocket ships ranged from 8-15lbs and fought real hard. Jumping, tail walking and making hard runs. Some of them still had sea lice on them and were insanely fresh.

Rainbow Trout, well well well, the rainbow trout. Now everyone wants to catch big rainbows on mice in Alaska and we were not the exception. But, we didnt. The rainbow fishing was slow. One of those High water, late spring, El Nina messed up years. So we didn’t crush the Bows like they usually do but we did get em’. The fish we did catch were big an beautiful. One afternoon we whitnessed a Green Drake Hatch, of course our dry flies where in the other boat (our bad) but we were able to tie on bigger prince nymphs and swing them up.

Grayling. We caught a pile of grayling on driy flies, streamers and nymphs. Some Big ones too! they are a cool fish the colors on the big dorsal fin are remarkable and they fight like Mike Tyson. This isnt a great shot but it kinda shows how colorful these fish are.

BEARS

We were told that the difference between Brown Bears and Grizzly Bears was the food source. Brown Bears are more coastal and feed on fish and humans and Grizzly Bears live more interior and feed on berrys and humans. Either way we saw a ton of bears. We knew going in that we would be in “bearville” and had no problem with it. So the first 2 days we did not see an bears but could tell by the big piles of scat that they were near by. So we kept a remarkably clean camp and made lots of noise when entering the woods to make our own scat. Day three was an interesting day. We were floating down a section of the river that looked like the Madison River in MT when Christian siad “look at that pile over there” We glanced over and saw a half burried moose with bloody antlers sticking out of the pile. We were studying the figure pretty hard until we got about 30 yards away and thats when it happend. One of those no breathing, mouth open, eyes gluded, ass puckering moments. A Brown Bear Bigger than life charged the boat. It was a bluff charge but a charge none the less. It growled and gave us a piercing stare as we floated by in awe. WOW talk about feeling insignificant.

From that moment on we saw a lot of bears. But, they were more concerned with the salmon swimming by and not us. Here are a few shots.

We ended our trip about 70 river miles from the lake. We watched the river change 50 different times, saw countless bears and eagles and caught fish until our arms were tire. It was a great group of people and I am thankfull I got to shre this experience with my fater as well as make some new friends. Keep checking back for the video that is soon to come. Thanks for reading.

We spent 6 nights in the Alaskan Bush floating the Alagnak River catching all sorts of fish. Grayling, Sockey Salmon, Lake Trout, Char, Rainbow Trout..etc. The sockeye fishing was outstanding bright chrome fish, some still with sea lice, that fought harder than any steelhead I have ever caught. There are pictures among pictures to go through and some video content as well. I will be posting more as soon as I get a few minutes to sort thru it all until then here is a link to a Facebook.com fan page for BOA and their website.

Sitting in the back seat of a Jeep rolling north along the colorado river I was admiring the alpen glow on the horizon as the sun was leaving its last trace of light. My trance was interupted when the driver yelled over the open windows ” you two watch for deer while I roll this joint.”

Who was I to judge I just cracked my first beer and thought, if a fella thinks he oughta a fella should. Soon the road turned to dirt and we were well on our way deep into the north country. With a raft in tow packed with camping and fishing gear this was the begining to our 2 day float down one of the most remote rivers I have ever been to outside of Alaska. After about a 2.5 hour drive in the dark, picking up a half naked hitch hiker and dodging a midnight marathon runner in the middle of the prarie we arrive to our camping spot.

We built a small fire and drank what was left of the case of beer. At about 3 in the morning I woke up in a dead shiver looking up at the open star filled sky and starred at it and watched the night slowly turn to day. We rolled out of our frost covered sleeping bags, tired, slighly hungover and extremely cold. We made the 20 min drive back into town for hot coffee and breakfast where all 10 people in town looked at us with curious eyes.

Breakfast was 2 burnt pancakes the size of a dinner platter that I couldn’t eat so they became lunch. The other two wolfed down chicken fried steak and biscuts and gravy. I was having a tough time keeping it together. But these guys never missed a beat. I guess I was slightly more hungover and way more sleep deprived. But, that all passed and with the sun warming up we made our way back to the camp site and got packed up for the float. The put in was about 300 yards long down a dirt trail. And hauling a boat that is filled with the amount of shit we had was not an easy task. Once to the riverside we had our first beer and the rest of my pancakes, which were still burnt and had expanded due to the amount of syrup they absorbed. Awful… Anyway we finally made it on the water and started fishing we hiked up stream into the canyon and started catching Bron trout on salmon flies and streamers.

After some time wading we hopped back on the oars and continued down stream. The area was vast and wild we never saw another boat for 2 days. We did meet a stranger at a camp spot fly fishing but he was a cool fella and joined us for beers later that night. The water was full of healthy brown trout and rainbow trout. All the fish we caught we in the high teens with some bigger ones that were lost during battle.

The second day of our float was even better than the first we caught them on streamers and big nymphs all the way to the take out. It got to a point where it was a little rediculous. Any water that looked fishy was, and we started calling out shots. Again we didn’t see another soul and pushed on to the take out. After getting lost for about 30min we finally found our route and headed home. To my crew thanks for the invite and showing me an amazing piece of country. I am off to another remote river in Alaska for a while and will report in as soon as I return. Thanks for reading.

Been a while since the last entry and I apologize to those of you who have been checking back and seeing the same old thing. I have been busy with work and shipping out sasquatch sweathshirts. Wow what a project and i want to thank all of you who bought a shirt. I can assure you that this is a challenging task and once I again I thank you for being patient. Other than working and watching graphs go up up up you havent missed anthign except this. About a week ago the Eagle River came back into floatable levels and the fishing has been great. We have been floating it late after work and catching them all 3 ways (streamers, nymphs and dry flies) The caddis are ready to go off and as soon as things start to level out we can expect to see good numbers of fish on the surface. Amy (aka wifey) and I did some damage the last couple days she was lightiing them up in every soft pocket we could reach.

So we had a little contest and this fish was the winner. It was Amy VS Cuz Andrew and although andrew put in a great effort he just couldn’t compete with lady luck.

We had to sneak pretty hard to find this fella. I am telling you Amos was on fire.

This one came yesterday pretty close to the boat ramp. Cam the chocolate lap dog was very excited to see a fish in the net. Great couple days on the Eagle River. if we could get this wind to stop blowing for a few days things could get even better. Keep checkin in I will keep posting.

It was time for a report so here it is. The Eagle River which flows directly behind our little abode has been producing some serious fishing until about one day ago. It is a finiky river this time of year with peaks and troughs on the water gauge as well as high and low temperatures. Over the past couple weeks we have put just over 70 miles floating down the river. Tandem streamer rigs were turning a lot of fish, Olive and Yellow have been the hot colors and it seemed most of the fish were chasing in the fast pocket water. The long slow deep pools were hit or miss.

The weather started to warm up last weekend and so did the water temperature. This brought the caddis to life. The mothers day caddis hatch came about a week late but what a marvel to see. It looked like it was snowing all day.

Derek Rust From Tahoe NV was driving thru on his way to learn how to pole a boat in the keys and made a stop for the event. I would say he got real lucky, because the river blew out 2 days later. He kept saying that he had never seen a hatch as thick as this nor one that had lasted all day. It was odd to see so many bugs on the water and no heads popping on the surface. But once the clouds rolled in around 1 oclock there were fish rising everywhere. It was almost too easy. They would eat it skated dead drifted and as soon as it hit the water.

Heres a shot of Derek picking out his next target far on river right.

Success

The next day Bob and I tried to hit it again but the temps dropped and not as many eager fish on the surface. we did boat a dozen or so but we had to work for them. I am trying to bring back the tweed for dry fly season maybe it will bring me some luck.

Got lucky with this one sipping deep under the brush. Maybe the hat does work..
