Yampa River: Winter Fly Fishing

Me and the dog headed to the Yampa River last week and made the long bike in along Stagecoach Reservoir. The fishing was good but it was even better to just be out of the house. The temp must have been around 45 and all sun. I arrived to find 2 other fisherman just getting there and we had the place to ourselves. I nymphed a little then switched over to dries for hte rest of the day after seeing a risers. I hooked a few on small midge patterns then spent the rest of my day messing around with an underwater video camera.

Only took one pic of a fish and it came out like this…

The only tough part about fishing the yampa this time of year is that you have to either hike or ride a bike in. They close the road for the Elk and even though the ride/walk in isn’t so bad the ride/walk out is mostly up hill and usually all muddy. By the time you get to the truck you are smoked.

Saturday was just as nice as Friday so Amos and I went to Vail to take a few turns. I was able to take this pic without crashing on our way over to Blue Sky Basin. That is Mount Holy Cross in the background.

  1. Joey,

Did you use the Paul Zimmerman Flouro Fibre Diamond Braid Shuck Midge. If so, How did it work?? Hope that you and Amy are well. Can’t wait to float the Fork soon with ya.

  2. awesome joey — sometime “the dog” is the best “fishin’ buddy” ever .. all of my memories of taking my lab fishin are great ones .. last year i didn’t take juneau all that much .. this year, i’m going to try to .. thanks for reminding me and making me look back on the great days of fishin me and my dog have had .. he ain’t gettin’ any younger — so, definately gonna get him out this year .. he loves it ..
